As you forge forward in this life, consider the most important commandment the Lord has given you. It is a commandment that if you keep it, you will, in turn, keep all of His commandments. What is this commandment? Love one another.
A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this, all people will know that you are my disciples if you have love for one another.” John 13:34-35
If you love your neighbors, parents, brothers, sisters, everyone you contact daily, and even your enemies, you will also desire to obey all the rest of God’s commands. Being faithful to obey God’s commands proves that you are truly born a child of God.
Whoever has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me. And he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him.” John 14:21
You will reap what you sow. If you love, you will be loved, but if you hate, you will be hated, a clear fact of life. Though some people will hate you because you follow Jesus, it is the Lord in you that they hate. But to love is to be like the Father, and those who are of the Father will love you.
“If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you. If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world; therefore, the world hates you.” John 15:18-19
Are the fruits of the Spirit of God displayed for all to see in your life? If not, you should evaluate your heart. If your heart is filled with bitterness, envy, strife, lust, hate, greed, or jealousy, you need the Lord Jesus Christ to clean you of those things and then fill you with His love. God will give you His love and Spirit if you seek Him to follow His ways. You can only receive true love if God gives it to you. He wants to give it to you as a gift, but you must provide your life to Him first and forsake all sin and wicked desires. Following the Father by the Spirit will bring you what you need all along.
Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. Anyone who does not love does not know God because God is love. 1 John 4:7-8 “For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.” Luke 6:45
If God’s Spirit is truly in you. If He has given you His love, you will display His character: love, joy, peace, goodness, kindness, patience, faithfulness, temperance, and self-control. Cry out to the Lord for forgiveness. Ask Him for His Spirit to come and fill you with His love so you can pour it out on others without cost. He will change your heart and mind so you can love one another.
Only through the power of the Holy Spirit can you be changed. It is only through the love of God that we can truly love others. Read these last five verses and test yourself to see if you possess the love of God. Then repent for any sins you are guilty of. Ask God for this love, receive it by faith, and then go and give it away.
Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, and endures all things. Love never ends. 1 Corinthians 13:4-8
