Some days you may find yourself, asking yourself, “why is this such a struggle,” “why do I feel like I just can’t do anything right,” or “why can’t I just escape these trials!” There is a whole list of questions you may ask “why” when you are going through a hard time or walking through the storms of your life. You may be able to relate to what Job said?
After this Job opened his mouth and cursed the day of his birth. And Job said: “Let the day perish on which I was born, and the night that said, ‘A man is conceived.’ Let that day be darkness! May God above not seek it, nor light shine upon it. Let gloom and deep darkness claim it. Let clouds dwell upon it; let the blackness of the day terrify it. That night—let thick darkness seize it! Let it not rejoice among the days of the year; let it not come into the number of the months.” Job 3:1-6
Understand that there is a reason for the pain. There is purpose in your suffering. As followers of the Lord Jesus, you may or may not know this. But He has a plan and purpose for each test and trial that you have to go through. Trust Him and learn from the lessons He is teaching you.
When you are young and inexperienced in His ways your sight is clouded or even blinded to why He is allowing things to happen. Many times it feels like it is the end. Like there is no hope. But He actually is doing this on purpose, so that you may follow by faith. The Lord is there with you. He is in control. So call out to Him and He will take your hand. He will help you. He will make sure you get through this struggle just like He has always done before.
I have set the Lord always before me; because He is at my right hand, I shall not be shaken. Therefore my heart is glad, and my whole being rejoices; my flesh also dwells secure. Psalm 16:8-9
Why does the Lord allow these trials? He does this because He loves you. He does it because of His great love. He must test you and refine you. To purify those things that keep you from conforming to His image. Those things that keep you walking in sin and the ways of this world.
Yes, God is making you in His image. It is called refinement, it is pruning, and it is painful. But it is very much worthwhile. That you may produce much fruit. Be comforted in this one thing, dear brothers and sisters. If God is pruning you, making you more like Him, you are His Son or Daughter. What a wonderful, reassuring, and comforting understanding to your soul. You are His child.
I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. Every branch in me that does not bear fruit He takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit. Already you are clean because of the word that I have spoken to you. Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. John 15:1-4
So abide in the Lord Jesus Christ and allow Him to prune your branches. Without Him, you can do nothing. His work and pruning will cause you to bear fruit and good deeds the Lord has prepared for you to do. What a true blessing that will be when He uses you for His glory because of the pruning.
No longer will you be like you used to be, walking around in the dark, cut off and worthless. But now you have been grafted into the Lord, walking in the His light and ways. Using that fruit to give life to others. Bringing them to the Lord.
I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in Him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. If anyone does not abide in me he is thrown away like a branch and withers; and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned. John 15:5-6
It is a very sad state of affairs when a person learns of God and starts to follow Him, but when the pruning comes and they resist Him. Instead of it creating a healthy and vibrant branch that bears fruit, they are separated from the vine, from Jesus, and wither.
Do not resist the Lord but abide in Him and you will be made vibrant and full of life. Because of His great love, you will be filled with His love and His joy as well. You will desire to share your faith with others, so that they may be saved from the judgment to come.
If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. By this, my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples. As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love. John 15:7-9
Keep moving forward in your faith in the Lord in every test and trial. Obey His commands and you will abide in the nurturing vine that is Jesus. You will bear fruit. This is proof of your salvation. The pruning itself is proof that He is your Heavenly Father. Just think of this, all things in your life have a divine purpose, designed by God Himself for your good and His glory.
If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in His love. These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full. John 15:10-11
