God’s Purposeful Pruning

Some days you may find yourself, asking yourself, “why is this such a struggle,” “why do I feel like I just can’t do anything right,” or “why can’t I just escape this!” There is a whole list of questions you may ask “why” when you are going through a hard time or walking through the storms of your life. Can you relate to what Job said?

After this Job opened his mouth and cursed the day of his birth. And Job said: “Let the day perish on which I was born, and the night that said, ‘A man is conceived.’ Let that day be darkness! May God above not seek it, nor light shine upon it. Let gloom and deep darkness claim it. Let clouds dwell upon it; let the blackness of the day terrify it. That night—let thick darkness seize it! Let it not rejoice among the days of the year; let it not come into the number of the months.” Job 3:1-6

Understand that there is a reason for the pain and purpose of suffering. As followers of the Lord you know this, but many times you forget when you are in the moment. I have been there many times.

Your sight is clouded or even blinded and it feels like it is the end, like you are just “Done!” But the Lord is there with you. Call out to Him and He will take your hand and help you through. He will make sure you get through this struggle.

I have set the Lord always before me; because He is at my right hand, I shall not be shaken. Therefore my heart is glad, and my whole being rejoices; my flesh also dwells secure. Psalm 16:8-9

Why does the Lord do this? He does this because He loves you, and because of His great love, He must cut off those things that keep you from conforming to His image. Those things that keep you walking in sin and the ways of this world.

Yes, God is making you into His image. But it is painful. Also, be comforted in this one thing, dear brothers and sisters. If God is pruning you, making you more like Him, you are His Son or Daughter. What a wonderful reassurance and comfort to the soul this is!

I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. Every branch in me that does not bear fruit He takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit. Already you are clean because of the word that I have spoken to you. Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. John 15:1-4

So abide in the Lord Jesus Christ and allow Him to do His work. Without Him, you can do nothing. His work and pruning will cause you to bear fruit and good deeds the Lord has prepared for you to do. What a true blessing that will be when He uses you for His glory because of the pruning.

No longer will you be like you used to be, walking around in the dark, but walking in the light and ways of the Lord. Using that fruit to give life to others.

I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in Him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. If anyone does not abide in me he is thrown away like a branch and withers; and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned. John 15:5-6

It is a very sad state of affairs when a person learns of God and starts to follow Him, but when the pruning comes they resist Him and instead of it creating health and vibrance, they separate themselves from the vine, from Jesus, and wither and die.

Do not resist the Lord but abide in Him and you will be made vibrant and full of life. Because of His great love for you, you will be filled with His love and His joy as well.

If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples. As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love. John 15:7-9

Keep moving forward in your faith in the Lord in every situation, obey His commands and you will abide in the vine who is Jesus. You will bear fruit. This is proof of your salvation and the pruning itself is proof that He is your Heavenly Father. Just think, all things in your life have a divine purpose.

If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in His love. These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full. John 15:10-11
