The Ability To Resist

There is no sin that is not common to man; all of us will fall in many ways. But for the faithful follower of God, those who have His Holy Spirit, He will make way for you to escape the temptation. The Holy Spirit that resides within you will not allow the temptation to go further than your ability to resist. But you must do the work of resisting.

Submit yourselves, therefore, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. James 4:7

The Lord is there when you fall into sin, prodding you to follow His ways. He is ready to give you the strength to resist and forgiveness if you fall. So turn, repent quickly, and do what is right. He will not let you stay in that state of rebellion. But He will make you miserable until you cry to Him that He may pull you out of the slimy pit of sin and clean you once again. We all fall to sin, even the best of us. Praise the Lord. His love and mercy are neverending.

He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; He set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand. Psalm 40:2 Jesus said to him, “The one who has bathed does not need to wash, except for his feet, but is completely clean. And you are clean, but not every one of you.” John 13:10

What a great and wonderful restoration He will accomplish for you. He longs to purify His children and bring you back into His good graces every time. He never fails to rescue those who seek after Him and forgive. He is always working on you to make you into His perfect image. He is continually transforming His children through His refinement by fire.

And I will put this third into the fire, and refine them as one refines silver, and test them as gold is tested. They will call upon my name, and I will answer them. I will say, ‘They are my people, and they will say, ‘The LORD is my God.’ Zechariah 13:9

Keep your face ever toward the Lord. Keep praying, seek righteousness, and actively resist the devil and temptation. Pursue the things of the Lord, everything that is good, pure, and honorable. Take back what the evil one has stolen. Your testimony will stand as evidence of the great things the Lord has done for everyone to see. The redemption God has accomplished in your life will be a badge of honor. Give Jesus all the glory, for He has saved and changed you.

Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. Philippians 4:8

Turn the tables on the devil. Do what is right no matter what the consequences or what anyone may think. I know that it is hard, but it is supposed to be. The longer you keep your face toward the Lord and see His beauty, the more the things the devil offers become putrid in your sight. They will no longer be appetizing but revolting. His Spirit does wonders for good when you endure long-suffering.

Honor the Lord in everything. Learn from those who have gone before you. Remember that God has given you many examples of those who fell to the devil’s lies. Yet, many also suffered, endured, succeeded in the Lord, and were rewarded handsomely in Heaven. Remember that you are more than a conqueror in Christ Jesus, so you may not fall. The Spirit of the Lord Himself is with you. He is your constant companion and defender. Depend on Him with a firm and steadfast faith. He will fulfill all His promises.

Now, these things took place as examples for us that we might not desire evil as they did. Do not be idolaters as some of them were; as it is written, “The people sat down to eat and drink and rose up to play.” We must not indulge in sexual immorality as some of them did, and twenty-three thousand fell in a single day. We must not put Christ to the test, as some of them did and were destroyed by serpents, nor grumble, as some of them did and were destroyed by the Destroyer.

Now, these things happened to them as an example, but they were written down for our instruction, on whom the end of the ages has come. Therefore, let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall. No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and He will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation, He will also provide the way of escape that you may be able to endure it. 1 Corinthians 10:6-13
