God’s Unchangeability

When you consider who God is, I am sure many thoughts and ideas come to mind. Thoughts of what the Bible says. Views of what others have said or written about Him in the past. Ideas of what the church has and is teaching at this very moment.

Many are true, and many more, in fact, are not. We are not like God; therefore, we tend to think He is like us, but He is not. You can not fully understand Him. Yet men, in their arrogance, have described Him in a manner they could understand. They think they know Him and have accurately described His character and disposition. But what they imagine could not be further from the truth.

Without the Holy Spirit, you can not see the truth from the false. To His fullness, no one can fully understand Him. Yet, He has described Himself in truth every day. We see His infinite glory in creation, intelligence, and creativity in the universe. Yet the full extent of His omnipotence is simply beyond our grasp.

God is eternal and unchangeable, which is hard to comprehend for a finite mind. Moreover, it is difficult to comprehend that He is everywhere simultaneously and can see every event from the beginning to the end of time. We can only see what is before us and remember what came from the past. We also tend to change our opinions, beliefs, feelings, views, and even religious convictions, at times, daily.

But not God. No, He has declared, “I am God; I do not change. I Am the same yesterday, today, and forever.” Do not be deceived in believing the false perception that He does change, that He is like us, or what many falsely say He is or is not. He can not commit evil and will never permit it to go unpunished.

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. Do not be led away by diverse and strange teachings, for it is good for the heart to be strengthened by grace, not by foods, which have not benefited those devoted to them. Hebrews 13:8-9

There is no shifting of His views. There is no morphing of the way He thinks or acts from time to time. He doesn’t operate in one way for two thousand years and suddenly does something different today.

“For I the LORD do not change; therefore you, O children of Jacob, are not consumed. From the days of your fathers, you have turned aside from my statutes and have not kept them. Return to me, and I will return to you,” says the LORD of hosts. Malachi 3:6-7

Are you going to listen to men and their opinions instead of the words of God? Are you going to listen and believe what God says by faith? It’s not always easy, but He never lies. Consider what you have listened to and believed in the past. Then decide in your heart and soul to only believe what God says. Measure what men say by His authority and trust the Lord.

Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change. James 1:17

God is not man, that He should lie, or a son of man, that He should change His mind. Has He said, and will He not do it? Or has He spoken, and will He not fulfill it? Numbers 23:19

Have you not known? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary; His understanding is unsearchable. Isaiah 40:28

My point in this, many who have taught in the church building in the past have spoken falsely. Yet, some continue to follow them. Unfortunately, they believe the wrong opinions or even lie instead of believing God.

Remember the saying, “a lie is a lie if everyone believes it, and the truth is the truth if no one believes it.” Even if all of mankind believes a lie to be true does not make it true. But God never misleads or is misled. He is completely pure, holy, and honest. Therefore, it is His Word that you must believe by faith.

So when God desired to show more convincingly to the heirs of the promise the unchangeable character of His purpose, He guaranteed it with an oath, so that by two unchangeable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled for refuge might have strong encouragement to hold fast to the hope set before us. Hebrews 6:17-18

Those who trust, believe, follow, and obey Him will follow Him by faith, even if they do not understand. Those who do not listen to all the different and diverse teachings of men, but listen to God, will not be led astray.

Praise the Lord; He will deliver them from all deception from the wicked. Yes, believing that the devil has led many leaders, even in the church, can be hard. But the devil has deceived many. So you must know the Lord’s ways so that you may be able to defend your faith in Jesus’ name.

Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted, while evil people and impostors will go on from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived. But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it. 2 Timothy 3:12-14

Think about it even though two things that are true about God may seem to be contradictory. If God has said it, they are both true. He does what seems impossible or improbable every day. Nothing is outside of His power except to do evil.

God divided the Red Sea with Moses and a staff. God crumbled the walls of Jericho with Joshua and a shout. He decimated an entire army with only Gideon and his 300 men though the men didn’t even fight. God even allowed His faithful servants to walk in a fiery furnace without a trace of the flames or smoke upon their bodies or clothes. He created the entire universe with a Word.

Who is there greater than the Lord? Who else can you put your trust and faith in? So wholly give yourself over to His will and control. To follow and obey Him in every aspect of your life. In exchange, a great reward awaits those who give their lives to be His servant. So give yourself completely to Jesus Christ, and you will never regret it.

O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory above the heavens. Out of the mouth of babies and infants, you have established strength because of your foes, to still the enemy and the avenger. Psalm 8:1-2
