You Are Not Your Own

The purpose of your life is not to be lived for yourself but for the glory of God. God created every person for a purpose. Yet, very many never understand what God’s purpose is for them. Therefore, they never commit to seeking the Lord to find out or accomplish it. If you are a child of God, you have been bought and paid for by the precious blood of the Lord Jesus Christ. The Lord is now in control of your destination; follow Him.

Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20

But now thus says the LORD, He who created you, O Jacob, He who formed you, O Israel: “Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine.” Isaiah 43:1

You may go here or there and decide to do this or that. You may plan, develop ideas, and pursue your ambitions and dreams. But the Lord ultimately has a better plan for your life. Those who allow God to determine their direction will be much farther ahead and eternally blessed. If you allow Him, He will institute His better plan and purpose for your life.

The heart of man plans his way, but the LORD establishes his steps. Proverbs 16:9

It is the Lord Jesus who establishes nations and peoples. It is God who sets up kings and rulers and the Spirit of the Lord that either brings prosperity or destruction to every plan, ambition, and motivation of all the peoples under the heavens.

He makes nations great, and He destroys them; He enlarges nations and leads them away. Job 12:23

Daniel answered and said: “Blessed be the name of God forever and ever, to whom belong wisdom and might. He changes times and seasons; He removes kings and sets up kings; He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to those who have understanding; He reveals deep and hidden things; He knows what is in the darkness, and the light dwells with Him.” Daniel 2:20-22

As a follower of Jesus Christ, you live in Him. It is for Him that you are alive. It is from Him that you gain your strength, wisdom, and understanding. You must follow, obey, and work for His kingdom according to His will. Do not strive to do as your heart desires or what you devise in your heart. Because of His love, He has saved you from death and destruction. Now He is your king, and you are His servant. Follow Him.

In Him we live and move and have our being; Acts 17:28

The point is that God desires you to give up your life to obey Him. He has a much better purpose than any plan you could ever devise. So, seek the Lord in everything you do. In every idea, task, and direction you believe you should go or accomplish. Seek to be cleansed from unrighteousness and sin so that you will not be led astray by any deceitful spirit or the desires of your flesh.

Desire to be filled by His Holy Spirit that you may hear and know His will. Be willing to stop your forward motion if He closes the door in your way. It is not wise to fight against the will of the Lord, striving and chasing after dreams He never intended for you to pursue. He will open the doors that are best for you.

I encourage you to understand this and take it to heart. Many times, His ways are very difficult. They bring with them struggles, pains, and afflictions that will press hard upon your will to endure. But they are always to fulfill His will in your life for your good. Therefore, taking the easy way out is seldom beneficial in the long run. As Jesus said, the broad road is easy, yet leads to destruction; the narrow road that God leads you will be full of trouble but brings great reward.

“We must go through many hardships to enter the kingdom of God,” Acts 14:22

Paul often told others to follow his example because He followed the Lord with pure faithfulness and knew His reward would be great even though he had to endure great difficulty. If you seek the Lord as Paul did, your reward will also be great.

Never will the Lord lead His children down the wrong path or make a mistake or error. But everything will happen according to His perfect will. He sees ahead of everything like none other. He sees the big picture from beginning to end. Nothing comes as a surprise to Him. He knows every event’s how, what, and why.

Trust Jesus completely and totally. However, you may look foolish to the world, but on the contrary, very wise to follow Him by faith and walk close behind Him into the unknown. Because His path is more secure and established than the mightiest mountains, always remember that God’s ways are the best. Even if you do not understand what is happening, He does and will abundantly bless those who follow Him by faith.

Therefore, do not throw away your confidence, which has a great reward. For you have need of endurance, so that when you have done the will of God, you may receive what is promised. For, “Yet a little while and the coming one will come and will not delay, but my righteous one shall live by faith, and if he shrinks back, my soul has no pleasure in him.” But we are not of those who shrink back and are destroyed, but of those who have faith and preserve their souls. Hebrews 10:35-39
