If I were to ask most people if they were a “good person,” what do you think they would say? The truth is, most of them reply, “Yes, I am a good person!” But by what standard do you think they are judging themselves? Most people judge themselves by their own standards of good, but God’s Law is the standard of what is good and evil, right and wrong. What would you say about yourself? Are you a good person? If you say you are, would you think you would go to Heaven when you die?
The common interpretation of what is good in our world is “whatever I think is right for myself.” But the problem is that there is no standard because it constantly changes from person to person. But what is right never changes; it is a constant. God says that the definition of good is moral perfection and complete righteousness. He is the one who has already written the Law of right and wrong. Everyone knows it because we all know that lying, stealing, and murder are wrong in our hearts.
The standard of God is much higher than yours. It is not just being better than someone else or doing your best. To do more of what is right and less of what is wrong. It is living in moral perfection, which is impossible for everyone who has ever lived except for one person, Jesus. You can see from this that no one on earth could be said to be “good.” So, let us examine what God says about being good??
Yet, “as it is written: “None is righteous, no, not one; no one understands; no one seeks for God. All have turned aside; together, they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one.” Romans 3:10-12 For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, Romans 3:23
You may try to justify yourself by saying, “I am not as bad as so and so; they are much worse.” But you are forgetting the sins you have committed in the past. You may even say that you no longer lie or steal. “That was in my past.” But does it matter to a judge what good you are doing now when you are standing before him concerning crimes you committed in the past? He will sentence you for all the offenses brought before him.
Every way of a man is right in his own eyes, but the LORD weighs the heart. Proverbs 21:2
You may say, “Everyone has made mistakes; we are all human.” You may deny you have sinned at all, either afraid to admit it, not fully understanding what sin is, or justifying your actions. “It’s no big deal.” Thinking you will reason with God on the Day of Judgment, or He might let it slide or pardon you because the good outweighs your bad. But that is not how it works. Not even in our courts of Law.
For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed. But whoever does what is true comes to the light so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God. John 3:20-21
Unfortunately, God will not just let it slide. Would a good judge let a criminal go just because he says he is sorry, that it was in the past, or tell him it is no big deal? No, a good judge must sentence the criminal according to the law and their crimes. Otherwise, the judge would be corrupt and could be sentenced to punishment himself.
And a ruler asked Him (Jesus), “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” And Jesus said to him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good except God alone. You know the commandments: ‘Do not commit adultery, Do not murder, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Honor your father and mother.’ Luke 18:18-20
Right about now, you may be saying, “Wait a minute, no one has lived up to God’s requirement of moral perfection.” You would be right. Everyone has sinned and broken God’s Law and the Ten Commandments and is in serious trouble on Judgement Day.
For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, Romans 3:23
God is a perfect judge and has to punish what is wrong. God knows the heart; God knows the truth. He will punish every evil thing you have done. He demands perfection for entrance into Heaven. But don’t worry; God made a way to make you perfect so that you may go to Heaven. Keep reading, and I will tell you the good news.
It is Jesus Christ that has paid your fine. He is the one who can make you pure and righteous in God’s eyes. But only if you are willing to accept His terms. You see, sin is breaking God’s Laws, such as lying, stealing, hatred, adultery, lust, disobeying your parents, not obeying and loving God, and many more things you instinctively know are wrong because of the conscience He gave you.
God has written the definition of right and wrong upon your heart. Everyone knows when someone does them wrong because God has given them a conscience. Even the people of a remote jungle understand what is right and wrong. For example, they know it is wrong when someone steals their wife or kills their child.
For when Gentiles, who do not have the law, by nature, do what the law requires, they are a law to themselves, even though they do not have the law. They show that the work of the law is written on their hearts, while their conscience also bears witness, and their conflicting thoughts accuse or even excuse them on that day when, according to my gospel, God judges the secrets of men by Christ Jesus. Romans 2:14-16
Some day, you will die, and you will have to give an account for all you have done, both good and evil. God will judge you by what you have done, what you have said, your mind’s secret thoughts, and your heart’s motivations.
You will stand there alone, and you will have to pay for your own sins. If there is no one to redeem you or pay for your crimes, God will have to sentence you to His place of punishment for all eternity. His prison, He calls Hell, and it will be a horrible place to be. There will be crying, weeping, torment, pain, and gnashing of teeth in Hell. But Jesus does not want you to go there and offers you life, redemption, and an escape route from Hell to Heaven.
The Son of Man (Jesus) will send His angels, and they will gather out of His kingdom all causes of sin and all law-breakers and throw them into the fiery furnace. In that place, there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Matthew 13:41-42
I do not want you to go to Hell, either. I know that everyone who does not have Jesus to save them will go there. God loves you and is patient with you. He has given you your whole life to come to this point, to read this message of hope and turn to Jesus Christ for salvation.
He gives you every good thing that you enjoy daily. He is the one who gives you happiness and joy in this life. Every day He gives you another chance to repent of your sins, to turn away from your sinful lifestyle. All day long, He holds out His hands to you, wanting you to turn to Him. Believe in Him, repent of your sins, obey His Law, and Follow Jesus.
The Lord is not slow to fulfill His promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance. 2 Peter 3:9
I(God) was ready to be sought by those who did not ask for me; I was ready to be found by those who did not seek me. I said, “Here I am, here I am,” to a nation that was not called by my name. I spread out my hands all the day to a rebellious people, who walk in a way that is not good, following their own devices; a people who provoke me to my face continually, Isaiah 65:1-3
Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. 1 Corinthians 6:9-19
God loves you so much that even though you are a sinner, He sent His only son, Jesus Christ, to die for you. He sent Him to suffer and sacrifice His life in your place so that you may be forgiven for your many crimes and sins against God.
For while we were still weak, at the right time, Christ died for the ungodly. For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person, one would dare even to die— but God shows His love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
Since, therefore, we have now been justified by His blood, much more shall we be saved by Him from the wrath of God. For if while we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of His Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by His life. Romans 5:6-10
Jesus died for your sins to save you from eternal death and punishment in Hell. He took upon Himself the complete Wrath of God you deserve for your sins. For everything you have done that is against a holy and righteous God.
But now you must turn away from those sins, which is repentance. You must believe in Jesus, have faith in Him, and follow His ways instead of your own. You must give your entire life to Him, ask Him to forgive you, and work on changing to be more like Him. But don’t worry; He will provide you with His Spirit and change you if you do.
He promises that if you seek Him, you will find Him. If you humble yourself and repent, He will forgive you. He will then give you a new heart and mind. He will grant you everlasting life with Him in Heaven for all eternity instead of Hell. You will live in His Spirit and honor Him for the greatest gift of all time. Isn’t this the good news you have been waiting for your whole life?
For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will hear you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. I will be found by you, declares the LORD, Jeremiah 29:11-14
Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come into him and eat with him, and he with me. Revelation 3:20 I, I am He who blots out your transgressions for my own sake, and I will not remember your sins. Isaiah 43:25
Come to me(Jesus), all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-29
Have you been seeking and searching for something to fill what is missing in your life? Jesus is the answer. Perhaps you struggle against sin, or you do whatever you want, but it leaves you empty and in need of something, but you don’t know what it is. Jesus is the answer, and you don’t even know it.
Do you know something is wrong with your life but don’t know who to turn to? Turn to Jesus; He is the one who can fulfill your life and bring true purpose and meaning to your life. He loves you, died for you, and desperately wants to save and forgive you. But you must humble yourself before Him, believe in Him, repent of your sins, and completely put your trust and faith in Him. Nothing else but Jesus can save you.
So what are you waiting for? Turn to Jesus today. He will fill you with love, joy, and peace. He will grant you a place in Heaven. Please consider this today before it is too late. You don’t even know if today will be your last. Jesus is waiting for you to come to Him.

Amen
