Where do you find wisdom? How can you become a better person for yourself and the good of our community and society? What does it even mean to be wise? Do you think you will find wisdom in higher education, from committing yourself to hard work and teaching yourself new things to expand your abilities? Maybe wisdom comes after gaining a certain amount of wealth, power, or influence in political realms?
Honestly, popular opinion ranges wildly from one person to another. So, how can we truly find wisdom? The world might say the answer comes from attending a University and getting a degree, listening to the greatest minds around to teach the next generation the wisdom they have acquired over the years. Some would say the answer lies in a far away peaceful culture that, from afar, seems to have no problems. Others insist that the answers are in the stars or connecting with nature, which will get you on the right track. But I would be wary of all of those things because there is no clear path or authority of what wisdom is and what foolishness is because it is all subjective.
The truth is that there is only one place where you will find dependable wisdom. Wisdom comes from the One who made all things. God is the ultimate source and authority on wisdom, understanding, insight, and peace. After God’s wisdom and righteousness, you must seek to become a better person. Or, in His words, He intends for all of us: “to be righteous as He is righteous.”
Proverbs 2:6-10 For the Lord gives wisdom; from His mouth come knowledge and understanding; He stores up sound wisdom for the upright; He is a shield to those who walk in integrity, guarding the paths of justice and watching over the way of His saints. Then you will understand righteousness and justice and equity, every good path; for wisdom will come into your heart, and knowledge will be pleasant to your soul;
You may not know this, but God spoke personally to over 40 authors on three continents over 1500 years and instructed them to write down His words. He did this so you may know how to live and find wisdom. God caused these authors, His servants, to culminate these writings into what we know now to be the Holy Bible. We know the right things to do and how to act by reading His Word, meditating on it, and learning from His Holy Spirit in prayer. Not only that, but through reading the Bible, you will learn about God’s Law, sin, good, evil, right, and wrong. It is the knowledge necessary for you to gain His wisdom.
One of the men that God spoke to was King Solomon. He was the wisest man ever to live. God gave him great wisdom because that is what Solomon asked for instead of all the world’s riches, power, and influence. It was a gift because of his humility. Also, God gave him wealth, power, and great influence as a reward for his godly desire. God knew Solomon would properly handle it all because of his wisdom.
We can all learn many lessons from Solomon’s wise words in the book he wrote, the Book of Proverbs. I will leave you with some wise sayings and encourage you to read the whole book of Proverbs and check out His words of wisdom from the Word of God. The book of John may be an excellent place to start as well.
Proverbs 4:1-7 Hear, O sons, a father’s instruction, and be attentive, that you may gain insight, for I give you good precepts; do not forsake my teaching. When I was a son with my father, tender, the only one in the sight of my mother, he taught me and said to me, “Let your heart hold fast my words; keep my commandments, and live. Get wisdom; get insight; do not forget, and do not turn away from the words of my mouth. Do not forsake her, and she will keep you; love her, and she will guard you. The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom, and whatever you get, get insight.
Proverbs 4:20-27 My son, be attentive to my words; incline your ear to my sayings. Let them not escape from your sight; keep them within your heart. For they are life to those who find them and healing to all their flesh. Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life. Put away from you crooked speech, and put devious talk far from you. Let your eyes look directly forward, and your gaze be straight before you. Ponder the path of your feet; then all your ways will be sure. Do not swerve to the right or to the left; turn your foot away from evil.
Ecclesiastes 12:13-14 Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God and keep His commandments, for this is man’s all. For God will bring every work into judgment, including every secret thing, whether good or evil.
